This talk will be illustrated by pictures from Egyptian tombs and museums around the world.

It will explore the history and development of the canopic vessels used to preserve the internal organs of a mummified person and discuss a number of issues they raise including:

Why are there four?

Why are they linked to the four sons of Horus?

When and why did the jars get their animal heads, and what exactly do they contain?
