Temple to Horus at Edfu. Notice the two statues of Horus either side of the gate, one has a statue of Caesarion, son of Cleopatra and Julius Caesar, in front of it.

  1. Edfu seems to get very busy in the morning, as the cruise ships empty their tourists into the city. And then, around midday, the place is lovely and quiet and easier to take photos!
Although the worship of Horus at Edfu goes back a very long way, this temple is actually Ptolemaic, although built very much on traditional lines. It is famous for being very complete and so giving you a good feel for what it must have been like in a temple. Remember that most Egyptians would not have anywhere near the temple interior – it would have been a place of complete mystery.
