Entering the burial chamber of mastaba 17 by means of the “robbers’ tunnel”. Quite a squeeze.

  1. This is one of the most difficult chambers to enter because the hole is so small and the passage leading to it has a very low ceiling and is quite steep. Worth it though, if you are prepared to get dusty – definitely an “Indiana Jones” experience! Clearly the robbers knew where they were going.
I have been told that the bodies of the (decapitated) tomb robbers were found in the burial chamber when it was first opened. Temple guards? Other robbers? I have not been able to verify this story so if anybody knows whether this is true I’d be interested to hear! In any event, the bodies have gone now!
