On a beautiful sunny day on 8th August 2026, a group of seven of us turned up for an early viewing of the Egyptian Gallery at Bagshaw Museum. Most of the West Yorkshire Egyptian holdings are at Bagshaw Museum and so it was no surprise that the gallery was full of fabulous artefacts relating to life in ancient Egypt.

Household items and funerary items were on display as well as fragments of stelae which were very beautiful. The highlight in the gallery was the Theban coffin lid of Ta-di-ta-nebet-hen, dating from the 25th or early 26th Dynasty. It’s a beautiful object, but in need of conservation in order to bring out the detail and, in particular the inscriptions.

Following our gallery tour we headed for the classroom where our guide, Katina Bill, had kindly laid out the objects from store which we had requested. It was a very good experience to get so close to these objects, some of which you can see in the photographs.

We all agreed that it would be good to return some time in the future. If you haven’t been to Bagshaw Museum then do find time to get along. Besides the Egyptian Gallery the museum holds many other interesting artefacts and it has a very good museum shop with many interesting items for sale. You can also enjoy a splendid walk through the woodland of Wilton Park, and even enjoy feeding the ducks in the pond!
